Can't escape extra costs

I AM a little tired of people such as Keith Ross (Have Your Say, November 2) referring to G Levell and all those who object to the massive waste of public money used to prop up the Welsh language as Welsh haters.

They are not. If the Welsh language is so universally popular in this country — as these people try to tell us — then why does it cost so much money to attempt to keep it going?

And why do these people always write their letters in English?

It is simple — the Welsh language is not much use to them.

So get real and stop using cheap jibes against people who are showing genuine concern for what is a massive waste of public money.

Andrew Hinton

My goodness, you would imagine we're spending the entire Assembly budget on the Welsh Language from the way these people harp on about it. The fact remains that there is NO well researched figure on the actual money spent on the language so these people are making unsubstantiated claims - they are not arguing from an informed position. I think they're inclined to present a rather inflated version of the situation. This leads me to wonder what is their agenda exactly? I think the fact that their letters are overwhelmingly negative suggests that any figure would be unreasonable to them. They just want Cymraeg to be ignored. Sorry butt, you are part of Cymru wether you like it or not ... get over it!

I still love this ongoing and tedious game. I can almost hear the whirr of Hinton's rod and reel as he casts out his bait, and then the biting goes into a frenzy. Where would we be without it? The letters pages would be empty and (slightly) less boring!

Judging by the barely literate comments on some EP threads, a lot of money is wasted on attempting to keep the English language going.

Einon i couldn't agree more, any money on the language is money well spent. Personally i's like to see more money diverted from the defense(War) budget. We spend over £40 billion a year and that's all we end up with is more enemies and bags full of dead bodies. Not a very good return for £40 billion me thinks.

The reality is that the vast majority of the Welsh public are happy to put their taxpayers money towards supporting the language. In much the same way as the vast majority of the public support Welsh medium education. The fact that Andrew Hinton has nothing to say though about the fact that that our fiddling MPs are planning on spending £3 Billion on renovating a corrupt parliament when they are supporting cuts for the rest of us (and yes, that includes Ed Milliband), tells us everything we need to know. The Welsh language belongs to the people. Andrew Hinton is a supporter of the British Establishment.

Andrew Hinton your argument along with the likes of the G Levells of our world is so full of holes! that its laughable!. I see that you object to public money that is used in your words to prop up the Welsh language. don't people like you realise that The very word bilingual suggests something to do with TWO languages so any perceived cost of bilingualism should, surely, be shared between BOTH languages. A monolingual transcript of Assembly proceedings, in either language, would have a price tag attached. So how much of the £400K bilingual money is actually being spent on JUST the Welsh Language? tell me Does English come free of charge?. And by the way Mr Hinton the reason people write into the evening post in English is for the likes of yourself who can't read or write or communicate in Welsh just so that you can understand whats being said in your language english. With that being said why don't people like you talk about money spent on other language translation why don't people like you look at the £100m of public money which is spent on translation services in the UK, because the way I look at things is that there are just over 3,000,000 people living in Wales; The cost of translation has been estimated at £400,000, not a lot if you break it down into per person: per year ratio. So its not a massive waste of public money.you see unlike you and others Having a great love of our languages and cultures and, living as I do in Wales, I think its money well spent!

I would say that Levell is not a Welsh language hater, oh no he is far more than that he hates not just the language but all things Welsh. The only plus side of his letters is that is ranting is so incoherent that he comes across as a total madman. Personally i believe that nothing destroys ones argument better than hearing the ravings of a total clown
