Four fined over dog fouling on coastal path

Comments (6)

FOUR people have been fined for dog fouling offences along the Millennium Coastal Path between Pembrey and Llanelli.

Council environmental enforcement officers issued fixed penalty notices of £75 to each dog owner, who could be taken to court and fined up to £1,000 if they do not pay.

A warning has now been issued to dog walkers to carry bags with them at all times, with owners being told it is not an excuse if their dogs are off the lead and are not seen fouling.

Executive board member for environmental and public protection Councillor Jim Jones said: "All four people fined were from the area and should know better.

"Our officers are very proactive.

"This is because keeping the county clean is a top priority for the council and for residents.

"Not only is dog mess unpleasant but it is major health hazard. We will do all we can to catch those responsible."

He said some dog owners were picking up their dog's mess but then leaving the bag on the ground or hanging from a tree branch.

"Dog bags should be disposed of in a public litter bin and if there is not one nearby then take it home to dispose of or keep it with you until you pass one," he said.

"It is impossible to have a bin on every corner.

"If you have a dog then it is your responsibility to clean up after it and dispose of the mess correctly."

I walk the costal path about once a fortnight from Llanelli to burry port and back, I take a small rucksack with me and squally pick up about six or Sven empty cans of coke or plastic bottles. People seem to think its their right to just throw them in the growth !

To all the irresponsible dogs owners/walkers who hang their doggies' goodie bags on branches, I have news for you - there is no dog poo fairy, so please take it home with you !

At last! I am a dog owner and am sickened by the amount of dog dirt around Burry Port. Yesterday my neighbour and I ended up cleaning up other people's dog mess from a playing field where kids play rugby. The town should be a prime tourist destination but if you spend your visit dodging dog dirt you are unlikely to come back.

It is there is no parity in these situations. The systems for magistrates to make decisions about how serious something is seems to be based on how they feel that day !

Too right about these owners' attitudes but whilst you can argue all day about the severity of the £75 fine, isn't it laughable that someone driving like an idiot with no documentation can get away with just a warning or similar? Surely the latter is far more serious ??

I'm a dog walker and I'm sickened by the attitude by some owners who let their dogs defecate anywhere they like and not clean it up. They give the rest of us a ad name.
