JUST in case you hadn’t got your sticker album underway and had been living under a stone, there’s a World Cup coming up soon.

To get us in the know ahead of kick off, this three-part documentary examines life in Rio and asks just what the tournament is going to mean to the city.

One in five residents live in the favelas – shanty towns clinging to the sides of the hills above – where the government has taken steps to bring law and order ahead of the influx of footie fans from all over the world.

Welcome to Rio is on BBC2 at 9pm.

I've been to Rio. It can be a very dangerous place to stay. The Police have their blood types stitched onto their uniforms in case they get shot or stabbed. Having said that, the Police get their own back as they often shoot about 20 people every week, within the city and especially in the favelas, which are extremely dangerous places and should never be entered as a tourist. Gunfights regularly occur in the favelas, due to the big drugs trade.
