Virgin Media to bring 230 new jobs to its centre of excellence in Swansea Enterprise Park

VIRGIN Media has announced it is creating 230 jobs in Swansea.

The entertainment technology giant says they will be trained customer service roles, based at its centre of excellence in Swansea Enterprise Park.

Virgin says the jobs, part of 400 posts being created across the UK, will help meet consumer demand for next generation television and superfast broadband.

It opened the centre, at Matrix Court, in July last year. It's already home to around 900 customer service and technical support employees.

Welsh Secretary David Jones said: "I am delighted that Virgin Media will be creating 400 jobs across the UK, with 230 being based in South Wales.

"As an employer known for its solid performance, Virgin Media is proving that, although these are tough times for businesses, they are still able to grow and build.

"The state-of-the-art centre, newly refurbished in Swansea in July, along with the additional 230 jobs, will further cement their base in Wales.

"The news today will further boost the local economy with the creation of jobs in Swansea."

Swansea East MP Sian James added: "This is really excellent news. It is so refreshing to see a company making a local investment instead of moving jobs overseas."

She said other firms should follow the company's example and help boost employment prospects.

Business Secretary Vince Cable said: "This expansion is good news for Virgin Media and for the hundreds of people who will benefit from these new jobs, which include many highly-skilled engineering roles. 

"The digital communications industry drives growth and helps us to build a stronger economy.

"Today's announcement will also support our ambition to provide faster broadband – in both cities and rural areas – giving more businesses access to the opportunities they need to grow."

Virgin Media's chief customer and networks officer Paul Buttery said: "In what is a challenging economic time for many, we're pleased we are able to invest further and offer so many more people the prospect of an exciting and rewarding career at the forefront of next generation entertainment and communications.

"By creating hundreds of customer facing roles we'll be able to meet the sustained appetite for TiVo, already the leading connected TV platform in the country, and superfast broadband alongside ensuring a great experience for all our existing customers.

"With this expansion Virgin Media will be even better able to support the Government's ambitions for the country."We're investing in the very communities we serve to ensure all our customers get the experience they expect from us as we power Britain's digital heartbeat."

    BossHogg - It may be true if you move too often, but I've found that most employers want a broad range of work experience rather than just one job. When I worked in IT, we didn't even interview anyone that had been in the same job for over 10 years, because those types of people tend to not be able to fit in to a new work environment very well. They tend to think that they way they did things at their long-term job is the way that everyone should do things. They are just so inflexible. That's what most employers think. Obviously, changing jobs a few times a year doesn't look good either. But moving every 3-4 years, and moving to better positions, shows motivation and ambition, and these people tend to make excellent employees. You may only have them for 3-4 years, but you know you'll get better work from them than the people that have worked somewhere for 10-20 years.

    immigrant1 Life is for Living I agree, but changing Jobs every so often can't look good on any CV. It gives the impression of insecurity (not saying you are insecure). If I was looking to employ someone who had a CV that read like the magna carta, I'd reject it. I've been working for nearly 20 years in the same company, but get variety because I go looking for it, whether it be office work, working from home or travelling. If you're prepared to step outside of your comfort zone then opportunities do come up.

    GorsseinonJoe - Virgin will be culling applicants from their first week. A couple of years ago, all of the employment agencies in Swansea were sending people on a convey belt to Llamsamlet, such was the turnover of staff. The only company that's worse in the area is running the PPI con-trick. They were taking on staff and paying them nothing, until they'd signed up some poor soul who wasn't aware that collecting PPI is very easy and simple.

    immigrant1 i'm quite happy with my job. With 4 days on and 4 days off and time off i work less than 140 days/year. Over 220 days free to do as i like and travel. As u say life is for the living

    When Virgin take on the 230 there will be a period where these agents will be trained, after about 4-6 months there will then be a cull to what Virgin actually want, around 80 - 100 new jobs. Still good but don't anyone believe that 230 jobs will be the figure they actually need. One other point, Virgin must be expecting to take a huge hit in faults and complaints as this is the national fault centre, so plenty of unhappy customers will be calling in.

    Neathboy234 - I would hate a job for life. Boring. I want variety in life, nit working the same place for 40-50 year. So do many others. Life is for living.

    I do feel sorry for youngsters starting out today, gone are the jobs for life and the security that went with them. I don't know if ill have a job for life, if i do make it to 60 at my place of work will have almost 44 years in. If i'm there until i'm 65 it will be 49 years.

    Virgin, previously NTL have a long history of announcing new jobs, followed by closing down call centres. In recent years they have closed centres in Newport, Edinburgh, Coventry and Liverpool, with the loss of many thousands of jobs. Anyone who works for Virgin shouldn't be taking out a long term loan, as there is no certainty the jobs will be there in a couple of years.
