BEING able to climb a hill or walk through a park is something most of us take for granted.

But for nine-year-old Swansea youngster Faith Jones it is among a series of struggles she faces every day as she has cerebral palsy.

Her family is now working tirelessly to raise a whopping £45,000 by March to help her undergo a life-transforming operation in America called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy.

The op would mean she would be able to jump on a bike and would give her the freedom to run up stairs just like any other youngster.

Her builder dad Darrell Jones, 40, of Cecil Road, Gowerton, said they had managed to raise an incredible £20,000 in the space of just three months and he hoped to hit the fundraising target in March when Faith's op is due to take place.

He said: "Faith struggles with the simplest things.

"She has to get out of the house in a wheelchair, but she can walk a little bit.

"The environment in a park is hardest for her to walk on as it's uneven ground, but if it's a perfectly flat surface she can get about. She can't walk up or down hills."

He added: "I was brought up around Gower but we can't take Faith to places that I know.

"It's totally inaccessible to her.

"Once she has the operation she will be able to go out and do these things.

"With physiotherapy afterwards there will be no boundaries for her."

Mr Jones said he and his partner Sarah Gardiner, 36, who is training to become a dog groomer, had played host to a series of fundraising events to help the cash roll in.

"We have had events such as curry nights, pub nights, quiz nights and we have had donations from people who have held raffles and we have also sold our gold jewellery."

He said there were even more fundraisers being held in January to keep the cash rolling in to cover the cost of the procedure at St Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri.

A fundraising night will be held in support of Faith at the Conservative Club in Gowerton on Saturday, January 19, at 7pm, which will include a band, buffet and auction.

Tickets are available from Mr Jones on 07849 666046.
