A SWANSEA fundraiser has been hailed as being "truly inspirational" after putting personal health problems aside to help the British Heart Foundation.

Mitchell Powell, of Waun Wen, was born with a heart condition and has undergone numerous procedures including three major open heart operations.

Yet that did not stop the 18- year-old, who once planned his own funeral, from organising a fundraising concert to raise money for the heart charity which has helped him throughout his life.

The entertainment evening, which included live music and an auction, took place at Swansea's Dockers Club.

Kev Johns, who compered the evening said: "Mitchell is a young lad who has had a number of heart problems and has been very ill over the years but he has put it all to one side to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. He is a fantastic lad and a big Swans supporter. Along with his family, he is going to Wembley on Sunday."

Commenting on the response on the night, which raised several hundred pounds, Mr Johns said: "Even though we are going through tough economic times, a lot of people were very generous.

Supporters

"There were a lot of young people there, friends of Mitchell and people from his community making it a lovely evening."

Of the lots, donated by local businesses and supporters, he added: "Signed pictures and the Swans stuff was really popular especially anything signed by Leon Britton or Michu.

"There was also a signed photograph of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. I have done a lot of these auctions but I have never seen one before.

"One group of girls bought a week's holiday in a caravan in Trecco Bay. I wouldn't like to be in the caravan next door to them! The were lovely, generous people."

Jayne Lewis, of the British Heart Foundation Cymru, praised Mitchell, saying: "We are delighted to hear that Mitchell's recent fundraising event has raised so much funds to help us fight for every heartbeat in Wales.

"This is not the first time for him to fundraise for BHF Cymru and we are truly thankful to him and all around him who support us with our life-saving work.

"Given that and that he has and is battling with his own heart condition, we hope that his work for us inspires others to get on board locally to help us – or to contribute further to Mitchell's work by visiting www.justgiving.com/ mitchellswansea."
