A STUDENT who stole lager from a Neath shop asked magistrates for help for an alcohol problem.

Chalie Lewis David Thomas appeared at Neath Magistrates Court pleading guilty to stealing the £12.76 pack of Stella Artois from Spar on Windsor Road.

Lisa Jones, prosecuting, said that on January 6, Thomas, of The Mews, Port Talbot, walked into the shop, picked up the box, and left, while in the company of another person. When officers stopped Thomas, he admitted the theft.

Iwan Jeffreys, mitigating for the 24-year-old, told magistrates that his client was studying painting and decorating at Neath College.

He said he’d been progressed to a higher level since joining in September because of his commitment to the course.

"This was not a sophisticated offence, he picked up the lagers and walked straight out of the shop," he said.

"He was arrested within 25 minutes."

Mr Jeffreys told magistrates that Thomas had told him he wanted help from the court with an alcohol problem. Magistrates ordered a pre-sentence report from probation. Thomas will be sentenced on Monday.
