A CARMARTHENSHIRE family is celebrating the birth of its first girl for more than a century.
Little Awen Gwyneth Jenkins was born in Singleton Hospital, Swansea, weighing in at a healthy 8lbs 7oz last week — 103 years after the last girl in their family.
It was only after proud parents Emyr and Lisa took her home to Pontarddulais Road in Tycroes that they realised just how special her arrival was.
"The last Jenkins girl was born on October 30, 1909," said Emyr.
The last little lady born into the family was Awen's great-great-auntie, Sara Olwen Jenkins.
"My father is an only child and his father had older sisters, the last of which was born in 1909.
"He did have two brothers — one didn't have children and the other had a son."
Emyr, 28, who works at the family firm, Jenkins Garden Machinery in Cross Hands Business Park with mum and dad Glynis and Howell and brother Gareth, 30, said he and his father had been working on a family tree recently.
But, he added, they had not noticed there had been a lack of the extra X chromosome for such a long time.
"Lisa and I had the scan, so we knew we were having a girl," said Emyr.
"Obviously we knew it had been a while since a girl had been born into the family, but we weren't sure how long.
"It was only the day after Awen was born that we realised.
"Me and my dad have been working on the family tree, then when she was born we just started talking about it and we realised she was the first girl for 103 years."
Emyr said there was a brief panic after he announced the news on Facebook.
"We didn't want to offend anyone so we panicked while we double checked," he said.
And Awen is a big hit with big brother, Micah, 2, as well of the rest of the family.
"He loves her, absolutely loves her," said Emyr.
"She's really beautiful."
Grandfather Howell, of Llanedi, said: "We are delighted with our granddaughter — the first girl in the family since 1909.
"I made a flippant remark to Emyr that she was the first girl in the Jenkins family for a long time. I didn't know how long, I thought maybe 90 years — but then we looked into it and it was 103 years.
"My wife and I are delighted, chuffed to bits.
"The whole family work as JGM and we hope that in years to come Micah and Awen will join us."
