DEVASTATED members of a rugby club have been left counting the cost after thieves ransacked their clubhouse.

Two cash safes containing thousands of pounds as well as cases of alcohol have been pinched from Skewen Rugby Club.

The items were removed from the club, based at Tennant Park, onto the adjoining rugby pitch and taken away.

Club secretary Ray Tyrrell (corr) said the culprits took about a weeks worth of takings that they had raised through the social club.

They also stole cases of vodka and Grolsch lager.

“They took two safes which were very heavy,” he said.

“It is a complete and utter mystery how they carried them off.

“They must have had tools to get through the locks.

“We have got doors, shutters over the bar, and a strong room, which they managed to get into.

“The office was ransacked as they were looking for the keys to open the safes. We are just devastated.”

Mr Tyrrell said they were now hoping to get their finances back on track, with punters going to the club for the opening games of the Six Nations on the weekend.

“Hopefully the bank will help us out and we informed the brewery straight away,” he said.

“Hopefully will be get back on track this weekend.”

South Wales Police is investigating the incident, which took place between 11.30pm on Sunday and 8.30am on Monday, when the break-in was discovered by staff.

Officers have carried out house-to-house inquiries in the area and have heard reports of a vehicle being heard at around 3.30am on Monday.

Crime scene investigators have also attended the club and an investigation is continuing.

Local policing inspector Huw Griffiths said they were appealing for any information from members of the public.

“We are appealing to anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious near the rugby club between closing time on Sunday night and Monday morning to contact the police,” he said.

“The culprits have removed two cash safes and several cases of vodka and Grolsch lager and we are also appealing to anyone who has information about the stolen property to come forward.”

Skewen RFC is a member of the Welsh Rugby Union and is a feeder club for the Ospreys.
