A BOOMING private rented sector is good news for landlords, but it has also brought problems, which are regularly raised when MPs head back to their constituencies.

With an estimated 8.5 million people renting in the UK and with rising rents and high house prices, many people find themselves caught between rental costs they cannot afford and a deposit they don't have a chance to save toward.

There is a hot housing debate in parliament at the moment, with calls for, among other things, more regulation to sort out inconsistent charges from letting agents, a national register of landlords.

Others are asking for a boost to the supply of rented homes.
