CHILDREN'S charity Barnardo's has warned that thousands of children with parents in prison could be hidden from the authorities.

The charity, which has launched Wales's first ever project aimed at giving support to children and families of prisoners, found 69 percent of boys with a father in prison will become criminals themselves and only 9 percent of children whose mothers are jailed are then cared for by their fathers. Barnardo's Cymru project, manager Laura Tranter, said: "We need more services to help children to overcome the difficulties they face when mum or dad is sent to prison.

"They are three times more likely to be at risk of developing anti-social behaviour or mental health problems and are also more likely to be living in poverty as a result of a loss of income coming in."
