A TEAM that helps the homeless has become the toast of the town.

Neath Port Talbot Council's housing strategy team won a top accolade at a national award ceremony.

Their Toast project scooped the Working With Rough Sleepers category at the annual Promoting Independence Awards.

Toast is run in partnership with the Neath Port Talbot Rough Sleeper Group, made up of various organisations and charities.

It provides rough sleepers with help and advice on housing and support issues, as well as a light snack and a hot drink.

It also gathers information to provide a much clearer picture of the extent to which people sleep rough in the area.

Council leader Ali Thomas said: "Some people, for a variety of reasons, end up sleeping rough.

"Services such as Toast are invaluable in supporting these people."

He added that it was an excellent example of partnership working.
