A MAN has appeared in court charged with attempted child abduction.
Jason Beynon, of Swansea, confirmed his name and date of birth at Swansea Magistrates Court, during yesterday's hearing.
The allegation is that on Saturday, March 15, Mr Beynon attempted to abduct an 11-year-old boy from a street in Gorseinon — an offence under the 1984 Child Abduction Act.
The name of the boy cannot be reported for legal reasons. Asked for his plea, the 39-year-old replied: "Not guilty."
Addressing the bench, prosecutor Anwen Evans said the Crown did not believe the case was suitable to be held in magistrates' court.
"In view of the seriousness of the (alleged) offence, the prosecution say that this matter should not be heard in this court," she said.
Representing Mr Beynon, of East Burrows Road, Swansea Marina, Grayson Tanner said he had no observations. Magistrates declined jurisdiction and the chairman of the bench told the defendant: "This case is going to go to crown court, because we feel our powers are not sufficient."
Mr Beynon is due to appear at crown court on April 1, and was remanded in custody until that time.
