A TWENTY-FIVE year old lorry driver has died after a collision on the A40 near Whitland this morning (Friday).

Three lorries were involved in the incident at 5.45am on Pengawse Hill, to the west of the town.

The three drivers were taken to hospital following the collision.

One had to be cut free  by fire crews using hydraulic cutting equipment.

The man who was killed has not been named.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesman said it was  expected the road would remain closed for much of the day.

The delays were due resurfacing as diesel had leaked onto the road.

Whitland's county councillor Sue Allen said: "I was deeply saddened to learn of the accident on Pengawse hill early this morning.

"The A40 trunk road has been so much safer since the no-overtaking  double white lines in the centre of the road had been lengthened  up the hill over 10 years ago."

She added that it is essential the emergency services remain based in the area so they can respond quickly in such situations.

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to call the police on 101.
