Looking at long term benefits

PROPOSALS for a new law that would improve decision making and benefit schools, hospitals and local government in Wales over the long term have been launched.

Environment and Sustainable Development Minister John Griffiths has set out proposals for new legislation to put sustainable development at the heart of the public service in Wales.

The Sustainable Development White Paper makes the case for a Bill that would legally require devolved public services in Wales to consider the economic, social, environmental and long term implications of their decisions.

Mr Griffiths said: "Our approach is very much rooted in Welsh values, with a focus on fairness, pride in our communities and our heritage.

"It places great importance on taking the best decisions for Wales, and thinking about our children's future and our quality of life."

    This could be an excellent proposal with very great long term benefits. I would say it is adopting the Welsh way of doing things, and will be shown in the years to come a marked difference between ourselves and England

    The Sustainable Development Bill will mean additional bureaucracy for public bodies and a brand new expensive quango to interfere in local decision-making. It really is time that newspapers stopped printing government spin without even asking some basic questions.
