A NEW library and community centre has opened in Waunarlwydd thanks to a residents' association.

The refurbished demountable was opened last week by entertainer Kevin Johns, and is the result of a successful bid for Lottery funding.

Residents' association chair Marian Lawrence said: "We secured the lease for the land for a peppercorn rent off the landlord, and then secured £5,000 funding.

"After getting the demountable, we refurbished it, and we plan to use it primarily as a library, but also for other uses. It has been stocked by donations from people living locally, and we already have around 500 books."

The building is also earmarked to host Pact meetings with police representatives, as well as possible classes.

It currently has 40 members, and is looking forward to expanding the amount of hours it opens.

Marian added: "It is early days so far, but just working to get it here has really brought the community together.

"And that is what it is all about."
