Language not a necessity

WHAT is the culture that Welsh language enthusiasts are so anxious to preserve? Culture is the appreciation and understanding of literature, art and music. Everybody in Wales appreciates and understands the most popular literature of Dylan Thomas and the music of the national anthem.

Art and music do not need a language, everybody in the world can enjoy the music of Mozart and the art of Picasso. Most can enjoy the literature of Chekhov and Tolstoy because they have been expertly translated into English. To enjoy Welsh literature it is necessary to be able to read Welsh which according to the Census only half of Welsh speakers can do, while all can read and write English; leaving no case for bilingual traffic signs, road and town names or for making everybody in Wales speak and read Welsh.

mwOcnd I am convinced that the chap in charge of publishing letters on the "Have your Say" page is connected to the Tonna anti welsh society as G level does have a lot of his letters published. The tedium of his letters is almost as bad as trying to read your comments without paragraphs. youmayliketotryreadingthisresponseihavenothingagainstthewelshlanguageindeediconsiderituptherewiththeromonticlanguagesofourplanetandlongmayitcontinuetobeso.

For the likes of Gwilym Levell it really is like shooting fish in a barrel. He spins out his line and the Welsh speakers bite, and then their opponents (not necessarily Welsh haters) bite and so it goes on. I love this game, but it is starting to get tedious

Is that all you've got to say sochat you do know name calling is very childish on your part I'm beginning to wonder if you are old enough to leave comment or even if you are able to hold a cohesive conversation on any subject. Yes I'm a nationalist and a proud one at that I'm also a internationalist a supporter and advocate of greater cooperation and understanding between countries with myself being able to speak 6 languages having learnt English and welsh at school I couldn't be anything else could I ? and sochat I know about the real world you see I worked around the world but at the moment I'm in Saudi Arabia in the middle of nowhere isn't technology fantastic ;)

You don't need language to be of Welsh culture just like you probably don't need your arms to run a marathon. If you are Welsh and you don't promote "having a Welsh language" you kinda look silly though. No offence to armless marathon runners who deserve all our support.

mw0cnd your quite right. Levell will be dead and rotting in his grave, and people will still be speaking welsh. Mind u he did make he laugh with this latest post when he talks about the music of the national anthem. Clearly the words "May the ancient language remain" is totally oblivious to him. As i've said before our resident clown Levell should be be made fun of too much, the poor chap can't help himself.
