A SWANSEA Valley AM has welcomed plans by the Welsh Government is to make regulations to ensure that dogs must be microchipped by March 2015.
Gwenda Thomas said that dog owners already had a duty of care under the Animal Welfare Act, and it is increasingly important to be able to have a method of tracing a pet dog to its owner.
She added that microchipping formalises the relationship between an owner and pet by promoting the owner's level of accountability for his or her animal's welfare needs.
She said: "I would urge all dog owners, for the sake of their pets, to have them microchipped before the regulations come into effect next year.
"This will help unite lost dogs with their owners, and can help to reduce inherited diseases.
"Owners should take their pets to their local veterinary surgeon, or to Dogs Trust who are able to offer a free service until the regulations come into force."
