THEY might just be the oldest swingers in town.

Twins David and Brian Perkins, 80, have been tackling the fairways and greens of Clyne Golf Club for a remarkable 63 years – and they show no sign of hanging up their clubs just yet.

The pair still manage 18-holes every Wednesday and their longevity has been rewarded with a presentation evening at the club in Mayals.

David, a former dental technician in Mumbles, who lives in West Cross, said: "We first joined in 1949, our parents Violet — who was a club captain — and Neugent, who was on the committee, were members.

"It cost one guinea to get a membership as a junior, which is about £1.05 today.

"The sportsmanship of the game is exactly the same as it was then, I think in all my time I have only met one person who has ever cheated. It is a great game.

"I don't play as much as did. I play off a handicap of 10 now, though it had been down to three.

"My wife of 50 years, Claire, doesn't play but I met her at the club when I first started playing there.

"At the evening we were given a decanter for our 63 years which was nicely engraved, it was lovely to be recognised in such a way."

Competitive

His younger brother by 45 minutes, Brian, who lives in Newton, said the two of them still retain their competitive edge on the course despite their age. "When we used to come home from school we used to pick up some of our parent's clubs and sneak up to play on the course," he said.

"We didn't think anyone noticed us but the secretary of the club approached our parents and said it is about time we had a membership.

"We were the only two junior members at the time, not like the dozens and dozens we have now.

"Clyne was a very difficult course in those days. The rough was thick with bracken and gorse.

"We are most certainly still competitive.

"We have a big battle every Wednesday, we still really enjoy it.

"Someone at the club tried to work out how many rounds we would have played at — it was more than 12,600.

"It was nice for our 63 years to be marked.

"It must be quite unique for anybody to be playing members for that long and even more unique for it to be two brothers, and even more unique that we are twins."

This is really a first class achievement. It would be very interesting to see if any twins can better this record. They are a cool couple of customers & it goes to prove how having an active sport to get involved in helps in both fitness of mind & body. Long may they continue. Dennis.
