THERE is a welcome return of a long time favourite, Graham Larkbey, at the Valley Folk Club, Ivy Bush Hotel, Pontardawe, on Friday, July 19, at 8pm.
Graham first played there as a floor singer in early 1973 and has continued to support the club in every way possible ever since. Sadly he does not appear as regularly as in the past since moving to live across the border in Walthamstow. Forty years on he’s still going strong, both performing solo, fronting pub-rock combo the Escape Committee and occasionally gigging with others including Robb and Arvin Johnson.
Those of you who are familiar with a performance by Graham who has appeared at venues throughout Swansea, including Swansea Folk Club and the Pontardawe Folk Festival, over the years will know that his set could contain anything from an unlikely pop obscurity to music-hall to self-written material – and sometimes even the occasional folk song.
In the words of one of his recent songs, he’s “Not Dead Yet” – and as ever - expect the unexpected. Graham has a birthday a couple of days after the gig, so go along and celebrate with this highly entertaining, unique performer.
Llantrisant Folk Club, The Windsor Hotel, Pontyclun have former resident Jon Heslop - now living in Cornwall - making a welcome return on Wednesday, July 24. Jon has been recognised as a major force in contemporary song-writing for over a quarter of a century. His songs are full of powerful beauty set to tunes firmly rooted in the British tradition. Equally at home accompanying himself on guitar or bouzouki or singing a cappella.
