A WELSH Assembly Member who was caught drink driving in October has called her actions a "cry for help."

South Wales West Plaid Cymru AM Bethan Jenkins was stopped by police after driving erratically at 1.30am on October 14 last year. She said: "It was just some sort of cry for help. That was what it was more than anything."

Afterwards she disclosed she had diagnosed herself with depression once she had read about the condition online.

She said: "I cried one day. I looked at a website and I thought, 'Oh my gosh, that's me'."

Before this, she had attended a number of counselling sessions but had not properly come to terms with her depression.

A car crash on the Rhigos mountain in 2005 had also left her with post-traumatic stress disorder. This caused a series of panic attacks, which were treated at the time, but still occur occasionally.

The Neath-based AM was banned from getting behind the wheel for 20 months in December.

Ms Jenkins, who was suspended from the Plaid Group following the incident, has now been welcomed back to the party after coming to terms with her condition. She said she now plans to campaign on mental health awareness.

She also advised people who may be suffering from depression to seek help: "You don't want to leave it too late so that you feel you're out of control."

This person was stopped by police for erratic driving. She was found to be barefoot and wearing a hoodie over her pyjamas. When tested, she was more than twice the legal limit. Strange that these facts were omitted from this story. I don't remember newspaper or Plaid being soft and supportive when Labour's Keith Davies was hauled over the coals for late night binging.

Clinical depression is a medical condition that requires professional help. Becoming depressed because you've been caught drink driving, can't be cured by confessing all to the media. Is this woman trying to sell a book?

Anyone else notice that politicians are never ever responsible for their own actions?

Self-diagnosis. Is there nothing that politicians cannot do these days?
