They were found at a house in Salisbury Close, Shaftesbury, Newport, at about 8am on Wednesday and taken to the city's Royal Gwent Hospital.

Police arrested a 27-year-old woman, said to be the children’s mother, on suspicion of attempted murder, although she also received knife wounds and was treated in another hospital.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

Gwent Police Supt Mark Warrender said: "A knife has been recovered from the scene. We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”
