THE birthday of a Swansea-born poet is being celebrated with a festival of Welsh hymn-singing in the chapel where he is laid to rest.

Daniel James, who wrote the words to the much loved hymn, Calon Lan, was born in a thatched cottage in Llangyfelach Road on January 23, 1848.

To mark his birthday Mynyddbach Chapel is holding a cymanfa ganu featuring youngsters from Gwyrosydd, Tirdeunaw, Pen-y-bryn and Bryntawe schools, along with organist Grenville Fisher, on January 23, from 7pm.
