CAMPAIGNERS fighting potential housing developments in Killay say the area could double in size if the latest suggestions get the go-ahead.

More than 500 sites across Swansea have been suggested as candidates for a major blueprint for the area known as the Local Development Plan.

The Save Killay Action Group was created to fight proposals to transform green spaces in the suburb into residential areas.

The group is now focusing on around 100 acres of green land on the outskirts of Killay between Hendrefoilan, Tycoch and Waunarlwydd which has been listed as a candidate site for housing developments.

All candidate sites are available to view on Swansea Council's website and the local authority is inviting comments on each one until Friday, September 30.

The Save Killay Action Group claims an administrative error by Swansea Council meant the latest proposal did not come to light until this week.

A spokesman for the group said: "To mislay such a significant document is a concern and to release it so close to the closing deadline for comments is worrying.

"We are seriously concerned about all these site proposals, not only because of the loss of green space around Killay, but also because of the impact on traffic, safety and community facilities."

A spokesman for Swansea council said: "A small number of candidate site submissions have recently been registered. "In order to give the public the opportunity to comment fully on these sites, the period for submitting comments has been extended for a further month until the end of October.

"Candidate sites won't necessarily be included in the adopted plan, but it is important that everyone has the opportunity to become directly involved in the production of this important document."
